Fieval/Eric Goes West: Part III (2)

Part III (2): Albuquerque, NM to Las Vegas, NV (Destination Palm Springs, CA)

I had a few more pictures I wanted to post to illustrate this leg of the trip:

It really was a beautiful drive through New Mexico. Mountain ranges populated the whole drive which made things significantly more interesting than flat land.

We definitely weren't going to enter a new state without snapping a picture of the sign.

Clint took this photo at the Hoover Dam, on our way to Las Vegas. It's a crazy place to see at night because everything was so peaceful, yet you still know the immense power the dam produces.

Fieval/Eric Goes West: Heading into Las Vegas

What is sure to be one of the craziest/coolest/scary things I'll ever see. Driving at night and peaking over the largely dark hill of the highway, the electrical expanse that is Las Vegas is revealed before your eyes. It's truly quite ridiculous the amount of lights in the area. Just wow! (I know the video is shaky, but I thought I'd throw it up anyway.)

Part III: Albuquerque, NM to Las Vegas, NV (Destination Palm Springs, CA)

Mileage before leaving Albuquerque:

New Mexico bills itself as "The Land of Enchantment" and I have to say it was an enchanting place. The drive across the state was beautiful and as you'll see later, the food was fantastic. Good food and good views are all I need.

Clint and I hiked up a small mountain in Rinconada Canyon, located just outside Albuquerque. It was a beautiful area, as the city can be seen off in the distance. The canyon is special for it's large amount of Native American drawings on the rocks.

I think this car kind of speaks for itself. She must have been carrying something important because she was movin'.

The plan was to stop in Gallup, NM for lunch and as suggested by ratings online, we found ourselves at Jerry's Cafe on Route 66. The good ratings proved true and we weren't disappointed. Stopping in Gallup also set up a unique situation as Clint and I were the online white people in the restaurant. The cafe seemed to be a local favorite for Native Americans.

I had the chicken taquitos covered in green chilli. The green chilli was really a nice addition to the food and from what I gathered is a New Mexico thing. Great meal!

Probably the coolest state sign I've seen.

Fieval/Eric Goes West: Part II

Part II: Tulsa, OK to Albuquerque, NM (Destination Palm Springs, CA)

Mileage before leaving Tulsa:

This was my second time visiting the Oklahoma City Memorial. If you are ever driving through OKC, it is certainly worth a stop. A really like what they did with the space. It's simple, yet moving.

Welcome to Texas! Darkness came quicker than expected after we got into Texas so there wasn't an opportunity to take any landscape shots, although from the looks of it there wasn't anything in Northern Texas. The warmer temps were a nice respite from the bitter cold of the last couple days.

According to a rather old looking sign in Groom, Texas, this is the largest cross in the western hemisphere. I think a certain cross a short distance across the river in Illinois would have something to say about that title.

We got into Albuquerque, NM ("The Land of Enchantment") much later than expected but made it non-the-less. The difference between the flat lands we drove for hundreds of miles compared to the taller landscape near Albuquerque was quite striking. The morning light revealed beautiful mountains that were only shadows last night.

Here is a brief view of the Oklahoma City Memorial. The opening shot is of the Survivor Tree, a tree that survived the destruction directly next to the building and now stands as one of the more prominent symbols of the memorial.

Fieval/Eric Goes West: Part I

Part I: St. Louis, MO to Tulsa, OK, with a pit stop for lunch in Bolivar, MO (Destination Palm Springs, CA)

Had to have the standard "we're excited to leave and here's the vehicle that's taking us there" picture. It's a 2001 Ford Focus if you were wondering. Midnight Blue.

Hmm, anyone want to take a stab at the the final mileage on the car when I roll into Palm Springs, CA?

Bolivar, MO, population 9,143. Home of the Garrison's. Detoured off of Highway 44 to grab lunch at...

Smith's Restaurant. Their claim to fame is an awesome, and giant, tenderloin sandwich. Unfortunately in my haste to eat, I forgot to take a picture of the actual sandwich. But non-the-less a very cool place to eat.

OKLAHOMA, where the wind... Notice the sign is shaped like the state with the top panhandle. It was an easy drive down Highway 44 to Tulsa. No problems to speak of.
